Today when ever a USN Warship or USCG Cutter enters or leaves PH, the crew mans the rails and salutes the USS Arizona, BB39.

But where did this tradition begin?

During WWII, did BBs, CVs, CAs, CL, DDs, DE, PT Boats, SSs, and all other shipping pay honors to the crew of BB39 and USS Utah during their transit through the
harbour?

When we came close aboard to Arizona or Utah we rendered colors and manned the rails.

One of the biggest thrills I ever got in my life was on a DD on the high seas and we deliberately passed close to some russian ships one of which was a
cruiser.

When the russian cruiser dipped her colors so did the rest of the pack, then we dipped our colors.

That was worth everything I ever did to see that happen:-)

I have read accounts from sailors in WW2 of their ships rendering honors as they passed USS Arizona (most submarine and destroyer berths were in East Loch, and
the channel past the battleship moorings was most commonly used, as it was dredged the deepest).

Yes, the north channel was also deep, but the east channel was preferred.
