        <![CDATA[ Does anyone have information to show how many SeaWolf systems were available to the RN in 1982 - so excluding those in deep refit-  and how many actually
made it South?


It does seem to me that some totally incapable ships were sent into the action, whiltst more suitable boats were kept at home. For instance, why send Plymouth,
and not Battleaxe? ]]>

			<description><![CDATA[ Per David Brown, <span style="font-style: italic;">Battleaxe</span> was in Exercise Spring Train along with <span style="font-style: italic;">Broadsword</span>
and was pretty much stripped to provide spares to her sister who was headed south.  Brown says she went into a scheduled availability that was cut from 15
weeks to 10 but is silent on her duties after that.  Max Hastings says <span style="font-style: italic;">Battleaxe</span> did not deploy due to shaft trouble,

been commissioned in 1980, 2 years previously. ]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[ IIRC the RNZN deployed a frigate to the gulf to cover for the RN.

Other vessels were needed as a strategic reserve back home - partly because the cold war was still likely to get rather hot back then - also because if it all
went t*ts up, you didnt want to have all the very expensive bits of your navy on the bottom of the ocean! ]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[ The RN had a certain number of ships &quot;promised&quot; to NATO, and they were required to be deployable in the North Atlantic. Other NATO allies filled in
for the RN for some of those ships, allowing them to deploy for the Falklands, but the allied ships took some time to show up.

			<description><![CDATA[ Yeah, that&#39;s obviously a consideration. But couldn&#39;t the Type 12&#39;s take those tasks while the better ships got on with the hot fighting. Battleaxe
eventually came South with Lusty, so she was obviously available.. so strange.

I can only conclude that it either wasn&#39;t thought through well or that once again the UK underestimated the threat. ]]></description>
