Whilst appreciating that military ships require expensive ruggedised fit outs, and costly
equipment.. I was still astounded today when I read that one of the cruise lines is to build a 250kton 350m liner - which includes every know luxury: cinemas,
a park with tropical forest.. shopping centre.. fantastic cabins.. for some £700m. All that bling must also cost a few pounds? So how do we get from 1 CVF £2bn
to 1 super-liner £700m?

3 times the size? Am not so sure about that - at least, it depends strongly on what parameters you measure. The size of warships is given in displacement (the
actual, total weight of the vessel) measured in tons, whether the long ton of 2240 lbs (ca. 1016 kg) or the metric tonne of 1000 kg (ca. 2204 lbs) - tonne is
apparently more and more common in measuring displacement. Cruiseships are not measured in displacement, but - like most merchant vessels - in gross tonnage
(GT), which refers to...

You have to design in a lot more damage control equipment and compartmentalization in a warship. You have more engineering equipment with built in
redundancies, big heavy lift elevators, a wide assortment of electronics (radar, ECM suite, all the junk in CIC, all that stuff costs a LOT).
Their is a lot of specialized stuff in a warship that a civilian ship just doesn't need.
