Is the water used as a matter of course for every vertical landing, or just in hot climates? If the latter, then that's a pretty narrow margin.

Water is only sprayed into the engine during the hover phase prior to landing on. 90 seconds worth has so far proved more than enough and in the last twenty years or so no Harrier has been lost for lack of water to cool the engine with AFAIK. Harriers in the landing circuit aren't in hover mode for more than 30 to 45 seconds normally. When the water does run out the engine will begin to lose power in hot and humid conditions but it isn't an immediate fall off and most likely would...

Jets spray water into the engine to cool it and reduce the impact of hot operational environments. It's just done on landing to increase bring back capability.

Interesting the comment that when the Harrier's in the hover preparing to land, she's water cooled (which bits???) and only has 90sec of water on board ....what happens after 91 seconds 400miles offshore with everying else around being wet and salty?

The NSW arrived tonight with Lusty being described as reaching her full combat capability (with four jet, yes count them, four!). Since Fighter Pilot: Afghanistan also filmed on Lusty when it was covering the NSW's work up, she must have been crawling with film crews last year.

The episode did highlight one problem with so few jets, one went U/S and there was of course no spare, so the new pilot missed out on his chance for a first take off, which had to be postponed....

More like it, tonight's one. Nothing like a soupçon of perceived danger to bring the youngsters into line.

Interesting mention of the flight deck having a hole near punched through it by some Spanish Harrier jockey earlier in the year. Must've been a real tooth-rattler.

I watched the second-episode Warship last night: it is annoyingly Channel 5 - the narrator feels he has to do the patronising voice-over in the sort of Car Wars / Traffic Cops kind of "hey I'm cool" voice: it should be contrasted with, for example, the programmes on HMS BRILLIANT and HMS SPLENDID. However it is interesting (and better than episode 1) and gives the RN some publicity.

Watching it now. Lusty is in Malta and had some trouble with procedure alpha - a bit of a shortage of crew.
They're enjoying the nightlife in Valletta though.

I did notice that the flight deck did look awful empty.

Agree with DMC- quite good telly, Dexter Fletcher's laddish voice-over notwithstanding. It's clear that Lusty is an aging ship, perhaps more severely than the ark was back in the days of sailor! To think that all four HPACs are original is somewhat surprising for one thing, though they certainly looked their age! Would I be right in thinking that refits have been largely superficial?

It struck me too that the duty focussed attitide of junior rates is commendable and a grand...

Enjoyed the show, but didn't exactly show the RN in the most favourable light (not blaming the crew/participants for that!) Interesting the segment about the hungover sailors returning a night in Portland - anyone remember the series 'Sailor' in the 70's about the old (I mean the even older) Ark Royal? Hungover worst for wear sailors being reprimanded on their return - times have changed :-)
Going to ask a dumb question though - with the all technical...

I seem to recall biting my tongue about this back in Feb. A lot of the older farts, both here and on RR were slagging off the RN without knowing the truth. Glad to see its emerged at last.

Interesting. While they mentioned the return to Pompey due to the buggered freezer, apparently the visit to Portland a few days later wasn't due to a broken oil filter, as reported in the press, but because the crew failed a training exercise.
