Lusty in the limelight  

AFTER Shipmates and Commando, the spotlight falls upon HMS Illustrious now with a TV documentary dedicated to the
ship&#39;s 2008 Middle East deployment.

Warship, which is due to air on Channel 5 from April 23 charts the highs and lows of Lusty&#39;s year so far, from leaving
Pompey and spending the first month or so stuck in UK waters for a variety of reasons, to visiting Malta and steaming to the Gulf of Oman with her... ]]>

			<description><![CDATA[ Water is only sprayed into the engine during the hover phase prior to landing on. 90 seconds worth has so far proved more than enough and in the last twenty
years or so no Harrier has been lost for lack of water to cool the engine with AFAIK. Harriers in the landing circuit aren&#39;t in hover mode for more than 30
to 45 seconds normally. When the water does run out the engine will begin to lose power in hot and humid conditions but it isn&#39;t an immediate fall off and
most likely would... ]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[ The NSW arrived tonight with Lusty being described as reaching her full combat capability (with four jet, yes count them, four!). Since <em>Fighter Pilot:
Afghanistan</em> also filmed on Lusty when it was covering the NSW&#39;s work up, she must have been crawling with film crews last year.

The episode did highlight one problem with so few jets, one went U/S and there was of course no spare, so the new pilot missed out on his chance for a first
take off, which had to be postponed.... ]]></description>

			<description><![CDATA[ <p>I watched the second-episode Warship last night: it is annoyingly Channel 5 - the narrator feels he has to do the patronising voice-over in the sort of Car
Wars / Traffic Cops kind of &quot;hey I&#39;m cool&quot; voice: it should be contrasted with, for example, the programmes on HMS BRILLIANT and HMS SPLENDID.
However it is interesting (and better than episode 1) and gives the RN some publicity.

			<description><![CDATA[ Watching it now. Lusty is in Malta and had some trouble with procedure alpha - a bit of a shortage of crew.

They&#39;re enjoying the nightlife in Valletta though.

			<description><![CDATA[ Agree with DMC- quite good telly, Dexter Fletcher&#39;s laddish voice-over notwithstanding. It&#39;s clear that Lusty is an aging ship, perhaps more severely
than the ark was back in the days of sailor! To think that all four HPACs are original is somewhat surprising for one thing, though they certainly looked their
age! Would I be right in thinking that refits have been largely superficial?

segment about the hungover sailors returning a night in Portland - anyone remember the series &#39;Sailor&#39; in the 70&#39;s about the old (I mean the even
older) Ark Royal? Hungover worst for wear sailors being reprimanded on their return - times have changed :-)
