We were evil babykilling swine? Seriously, that wasn't clear - the closest we got to finding out was a rather harassed looking young lady who was organising things being given instructions over a mobile from a rather hungover senior student union type who wouldn't talk to us. The whole thing was kept rather murky...

Because I was there in uniform at the time, on duty (TA annual camp), and didn't want to get AGAI'd. We wanted to stay and argue the toss, but the decision was taken by the guy in charge (regular Captain IIRC) for us to leave and head off to the Brighton Universty fresher's fair instead. I had a quick look on the facebook groups, and the following is apparent.

1. The Provost (i.e. the UCL admininstration itself) is investigating the matter after a series of complaints.
2. The Chair of the AGM has been suspended by the SU pending disciplinary action. If the action is successful, the AGM's votes will be suspended and heard again.
3. There is enough student support to have another meeting called to challenge the decision even if it stands.

Well, not the entire student body of UCL is a disgrace - nor is the Muslim Society here. The only reason this motion to ban the OTC passed at a Union meeting was because those who opposed it (like me) walked out because the Chair declared sympathy with the motion and conducted the meeting in such a way to pass it. When the opposers of the motion walked out in protest, the Chair declared that at the start of the meeting quorum was achieved and by winning 80-50 the vote was therefore quorate....

Sussex uni student union have already pretty much done this - the URNU is allowed (just - they're perpetually trying to get rid of it), but when I was there with a group that had pre-booked a stall to set up a UOTC we were kicked out by the student union for being evil babykilling warmongers.

In another of "you couldn't make it up" moments (e.g. Greenwich council declaring the only borough in London with its own nuclear reactor "nuclear free"), UCL has trained a large proportion of the MoD's naval architects and RCNC members as well as naval personnel from a range of nations for over 30 years and more recently it is where what used to be called the 'dagger' MScs are taught for RN ME and WE officers.

Dearie me. This is only going to encourage the equivalent set of numpties at Strathclyde. Fortunately, we do have a fairly sensible student population.

Practically speaking, the passing of such a motion only means that the Forces can't recruit, or whatever, at Union events or on Union property. Still, if the AGM was no longer quorate by the time the motion was passed, it ought to be invalid. At least it became quorate in the first place...

I don't think it's legal anyway - only the university administration could do something like ban recruitment on campus. The most the SU can do is stop groups having individual stalls at freshers' fair - oh no!

Furthermore if it wasn't quorate at the time of the vote it was invalid anyway - it doesn't need to be overturned. I have also read a statement from UCL itself, which said that it can only apply to UCL events.
