We have to know this first...was Manchester in anchor in Nouméa or Espiritu Santo, or at sea when Captain Stark was diagnosed? Then, how bad was it? Just a minor nitpicking :
"The docs say Stark should be fit for duty in about a week or so" after surgery for an appendicitis
should be true today.
But I'm afraid in 1942, three weeks should be more plausible, even if the appendicitis isn't complicated. But may be you have an historical example ?
