Gee I gotta add my thoghts to this one hmm ya think it'll be a surprize if n I say BIG MAMIE, to me and her crew she was the most batiful thing afloat, lots guns, single funnel nice lines, a stong looking ship one that looks like it's alreadys to rumble

They look like kitbashes where different scale components barely manages to coexist.
However if you press 10" guns into a 4000 ton hull you will get some odd effects...

These ships aesthetically resemble pre-dreadnoughts, but they combine the useful firepower of a pre-dread on a hull 1/3 or 1/4 the size -- albeit with reduced range and seakeeping.

Sealion I tend to agree with you. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I suggest plonking Bismarck down next to KGV, NC, Littorio etc and have a look.

Bismarck all the way. Bis looked great from any angle. Ludovic Kennedy decribed Bis emerging from a rain squall at the start of the final battle as "black, massive, beautiful. The most marvelous looking warship that I or any of us had ever seen". And this from a man in the navy that had the Hood as the pride of their own fleet, along with Tiger, QE, Nelson, & KGV.

Warships should be purposeful and brutal looking and to my mind no one does this better than the Japanese. The interwar reconstructions on old, slim British designed hulls with towering pagodas are simply classics and define what the word "battleship" should mean. They are still at it- taking western designs and improving them:

Agincourt! Maybe its the name (don't think they would be allowed to use it these days) but there is something about the seven twin turret layout all on the centre line that just seems so right .

For my tastes it has to be Hood, Tiger, Renown as re-built, Renown & Repulse as built and Vanguard.

I always liked the look of the South Dakota class too; compact,...

You can argue forever about technical merit or combat capabilities and never reach agreement but to me at least the most beautiful battleships ever built were the Iowas. They were so well proportioned so balanced and so functional. Nothing was done to make them pretty they just were . There is something about the 3 triple turret layout that seems so right

Hey guys, Im new to the board but have been reading it for years. I decided to finally post so here I am!

What do you guys think is the most aesthetically pleasing to the eye battleship of all time?

Ive always thought the Scharnhorst & Gneisenau had beautiful lines and superstructure. Followed closely by them "Iowas".
