			<description><![CDATA[ I&#39;ve a perfectly trivial question.   Ropes were originally fabricated with a left twist until the early 19th Century.  So what was the purpose of
changing to the current right twist?

\ The prop crew for the film &quot;Master and Commander&#39; had to have the rigging custom made since nobody makes ropes with a left twist.  I&#39;m guessing
that the advent of the steamship had something to do with it.

are reduced to the levels needed to keep the ship sailing and man the AA-weapons and the hangar deck is filled with bunks, showers, mess halls and whatever
esle is needed for a 8,500 mile trip. Any guess how many GIs/Marines a CVL could carry?

			<title><![CDATA[ Help identifying this 14" shell? ]]></title>

			<description><![CDATA[ Recently I took my boys to the AAF Tank Museum in Danbury, VA. In addition to their great collection of tanks and AFVs, they had this shell off to the side of
one room so you could take pictures doing a Slim Pickens imitation.  The shell had been painted over many times so I could not find any markings, and the base
had been drilled out and filled with concrete.  Picture quality was not the best because they did not allow flash photography and the lighting was not good.

me, I can&#39;t figure out what it was and have not been able to find any information on it. Now a &quot;1 Pounder&quot; is 37 mm in caliber, so I wonder if it

			<description><![CDATA[ Was watching the Vietnam POW movie &quot;Rescue Dawn&quot; this weekend ( I had never seen it) and was curious , does anyone know the name of the Carrier used
at the end of the film? Obviously it&#39;s not the Ranger CV-61 that it is intended, it&#39;s a light carrier of some kind, help I assumed, with a SPS-49 air
search radar turning, etc.

1. Why is it necessary for naval gun crews to wear flash hoods and not necessary for similar crews firing land artillery  ?

2. Why do naval guns require the insertion of powder bags as well as the shell while this is not done with ground-based artillery.
