Renown's refit

When HMS Renown was refitted in 1923 its new 9" belt was fitted somewhat higher than Repulses to account for the extra weight making the ship run deep. Does anyone know how much higher, and was the main deck adjusted to meet its top?

Did the fact that Repulse did not have this improvement be the reason it only had a 2nd class refit in 1933? In many ways a fully modernised Repulse would be tactically more useful than of one of the modernised QEs.

At a 1928 Soviet meeting on military and naval affairs, the chief of the naval technical department rated the quality of the Soviet Union's battleships. Of the fifty battleships in the world's navies--presumably a reference to the treaty powers--the Sevastopols were superior to thirty-five.
I believe there were seventeen battleships at that time with guns of 15in or larger.

In the Gulf there are a good variety of Royal Navy vessels but for some reason its appears to by the Type 22's that are charged with securing the Iraqi oil terminals. HMS Chatham has just taken over duties from HMS Campbeltown. Is there any special reason that the Type 22's are used. Do they have lots of smaller guns on them to warn off the small boats that can threaten the oil terminals? Or maybe they have very good surface search radar that can track all the boats very accurately? I...

The Ministry of Defence has today, Thursday 8 May 2008, announced the provisional selection of Piranha 5 as the preferred design for the Future Rapid Effect System (FRES) Utility Vehicle

What does anyone think of this. i thought the Piranha 5 would be picked as it is built by General Dynamics UK and the other 2 selections BOXER and VBCI are built by German and French companies. here is the Wiki link

The page has a map and where all the navies surface ships and flying squadrons are on deployment. The number of ships that are out on patrol is very impressive. I'm always reading about cuts to the navy and no money to deploy ships but this map was a real eye opener. The map doesn't include submarines because...

This turbine and reduction gear The cruiser minelayer-Adventure originally had a transom stern but it was quickly realised that transom sterns and minelaying don't go well together and she was rebuilt with a conventional stern.

How big a job was that and if a could be done one way with Adventure, could a non transom stern ship be rebuilt with a transom stern?
